From spa-day indulgence to smart design details, here’s what you need to know to make your steam shower both beautiful and built to last.

At Studio Squire, nearly every bathroom renovation over the past few years has included the same question: "Can we add a steam shower?" It's not hard to understand why. Steam showers evoke a certain spa-level serenity, offering everything from improved circulation to a glowing complexion, all within the comfort of your own home. And let’s be honest—what feels more indulgent than stepping into a cloud of steam at the end of a long day?

But designing a steam shower is more than just installing a generator and sealing the door. It’s a blend of science, style, and foresight. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes—from airflow to tile choice to the subtle slope of the ceiling—all working together to make your spa fantasy function beautifully. If you’re thinking of adding steam to your bathroom project, here’s what you should know.

THE ESSENTIALS: WHAT MAKES A STEAM SHOWER WORK

While it may feel like magic, a steam shower is actually a well-orchestrated design system. At its core is the steam generator—sized to match your space and materials. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are great materials for a steam shower because they retain heat efficiently. Natural stone? Gorgeous, yes—but it absorbs heat like a sponge, which means you'll need a more powerful generator and, likely, a longer warm-up time. This makes natural stone not as ideal for a steam shower. You can achieve the look of natural stone with large format porcelain products that have the same beautiful look as stone and will handle heat well!

One thing we always emphasize: placement matters. Steam heads should be located low on the wall—typically about 12 inches above the floor and at least a foot away from the door or any seating. The goal is to let the steam rise naturally and fill the space without creating hot zones that make it uncomfortable to sit or stand nearby. They should never be installed directly beneath the main controls or under seating, as the initial burst of steam can be intense. That heat comes out fast, and we prefer our clients relaxed, not roasted.

Then there’s the architecture of the space. Full-height glass doors and sealed joints are a must to trap the steam effectively. Ceiling design plays a quiet but important role—sloping it just slightly (1-2 inches per foot) ensures that condensation runs down the walls instead of dripping directly on your head. And trust us, nothing interrupts a zen moment like a surprise cold drip.

KEEPING THINGS DRY (YES, REALLY)

It may sound counterintuitive, but keeping a steam shower dry is just as important as making it steamy. The key is managing moisture in all the right ways. That starts with making sure the entire space is fully sealed—walls, ceiling, even the lighting fixtures. We use materials that can handle all that heat and humidity without breaking a sweat. And because steam showers have their own drainage needs, we always include two separate drains: one for the shower floor, and another for the steam generator’s automatic flush cycle.

Ventilation is another important detail to get right. We typically recommend installing a fan that turns on once the steam session ends, helping clear out excess humidity and keeping the rest of your bathroom fresh and dry. It's a simple step that makes a big difference—preventing fogged mirrors, damp towels, and unwanted mildew in your beautiful spa bathroom.

THE BEAUTY IS IN THE DETAILS

Of course, all this technical talk only gets you so far. At Studio Squire, we believe a steam shower should feel like a destination, not just an appliance. That’s where design comes in.

A built-in bench offers a place to recline and soak it all in. Tile choices range from moody to minimal, with porcelain or high-gloss ceramic making regular appearances for their ability to reflect light and keep maintenance low.

Lighting can completely transform the feel of a steam shower. We like to use soft, adjustable lighting to set the mood—whether you’re aiming for relaxing and calm or energizing and bright. Thoughtfully placed lights can highlight beautiful tilework and help the space feel warm and inviting, even before the steam kicks in.

Controls have come a long way, too. Many modern systems now let you start your steam session right from your phone, so it's ready when you are—because nothing says "welcome home" like steam on demand. It's just one more way thoughtful technology enhances the overall experience and brings a little everyday luxury into your routine.
